Joshua Clark Davis, associate professor of history at The University of Baltimore and author of From Head Shops to Whole Foods: The Rise and Fall of Activist Entrepreneurs, is quoted in a New York Times article about the rise of bookstores that support social causes.
Prof. Davis tells the Times that "activist bookstores" are a nexus for progressive movements through the products they sell, the spaces they offer for events and organizing, and so on. Since the 1960s, he says, these stores' business model has been based in "goals of liberation and equality promoted by organizers on the left."
