How much do you know about our national treasure, the Chesapeake Bay watershed? How aware are you of Baltimore Harbor, which links to the bay and serves as a complex habitat for both terrestrial and aquatic life? What can you do to preserve these important natural resources?
On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the University of Baltimore's Helen P. Denit Honors Program and UBGreen will host "Are You Smart About Our Harbor?," an evening panel discussion featuring experts on the biological diversity and ecology of the harbor, as well as a how-to session for residents of the city and beyond who want to know what they can do to protect the watershed. The event, beginning at 5:30 p.m., will take place in the Bogomolny Room in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The event is free and open to the public; an R.S.V.P. is required.
Panelists include:
- Stanley Kemp, assistant professor, Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences
- Tina Meyers, attorney for Blue Water Baltimore
- Wolf Pecher, assistant professor, Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences
- Eric Schott, research assistant professor, Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. Schott performs research on parasitology and biotechnology. He is a member of the Oyster Advisory Commission and the MDSG Ecosystem based fisheries management blue-crab team among other commissions and boards.
- Bill Stack, deputy director of programs for the Center for Watershed Protection. Stack has more than 30 years of experience in regulatory issues, engineering, modeling, stream ecology, monitoring, and other aspects of watershed work.
- Ashley Traut, senior program manager for stormwater and community outreach at Blue Water Baltimore. Traut is currently overseeing the Downspout Disconnection campaign and the emerging Blue Alleys program.
Attendees of the Sept. 18 event can expect an intelligent, insightful discussion designed to raise your "water IQ" and a demonstration of easy, practical, and money-saving ways that you can contribute to the harbor’s restoration and the bay's preservation.
