Baltimore RetroCineFest, a three-day celebration of rarely seen and legendary films, will debut at the University of Baltimore on Nov. 16-18. Programmed by Orpheum producer and film historian George Figgs and High Zero Festival partner Dan Breen and hosted by Spotlight UB, the University's arts and performance series, the festival is an outgrowth of a global movement recognizing the value of the canon of film—a growing movement that places value in the great works of the past as a key to understanding film's present and future.
"You can look at an enormously successful film festival like Il Cinema Ritrovato in Italy as an inspiration for our festival," Figgs said recently. "We want to emulate what they're doing, and expose audiences to a wider spectrum of the canon of existing film. The number of people interested in older film is a lot larger than you might think. They are deeply appreciative of artistically successful films, and RetroCineFest is our love letter to them and to these highly regarded titles."
The festival's offerings include the following; unless otherwise indicated, all films will be screened in the Wright Theater, located in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. (see below for ticket information):
Friday, Nov. 16
Saturday, Nov. 17
Sunday, Nov. 18
Tickets are $6 for general admission and $4 for students for individual screenings. An all-festival pass is available for $30 for students and $50 for general admission. To purchase tickets prior to the event, visit www.etix.com; search under “University of Baltimore” for all Spotlight UB events.
