The University of Baltimore will present "An Evening of Dead Baltimore Authors" on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the University’s Wright Theater, located on the top floor of the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The program, part of the Spotlight UB Fall 2013 performing arts series and UB’s M.F.A. Reading Series, is free and open to the public.
The program will feature short excerpts of work by several writers who lived in Baltimore for at least some of their lives: Edgar Allan Poe, H.L. Mencken, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dashiell Hammett, Ogden Nash, Walter Lord, Gertrude Stein, Upton Sinclair, Karl Shapiro, Emily Post, Munro Leaf, John Dos Passos, and others. Dorothy Parker, who never lived in Baltimore but whose ashes are buried here may make an appearance, too.
The program will also introduce to the community a Baltimore literary walking tour mobile app developed by Baltimore Heritage, Inc., in collaboration with the University of Baltimore, the Maryland Humanities Council, Maryland State Arts Council, and CityLit.
UB English and communications professor Jon Shorr said, "Baltimore has an incredible, star-studded literary history. Lots of people know and have maybe even read work by these people but have no idea that they're from or spent significant time in Baltimore."
Reading the work will be UB faculty and staff members Kendra Kopelke, Kimberley Lynne, Steve Matanle, and Peter Toran, along with a few other "great voices" from the community—Elisa Frost, Paul Kopelke, Dan Shemer, and John Wilson.
