Class Distribution Lists
Each active course has an e-mail distribution list created automatically and updated nightly. This is a great option for e-mailing all currently-enrolled students for a class. If you have questions about class distribution lists that aren't answered here, contact the Call Center.

What is the advantage of using a class distribution list?
One advantage is you can be confident that you are e-mailing all students currently registered for that class. This does not require students to sign up to a list service. However, the students cannot use this list; if your goal is to start a discussion through e-mail, you should request a mailing list on the list server .
-
When is the distribution list created?
The lists are created each semester as soon as registration activity for the class section begins, and they are updated nightly with new enrollment activity (drop or add).
-
How long will the distribution list for my class remain after the term has ended?
The list for a particular semester will stay in place for approximately 30 days after the semester ends.
-
Who can send to class lists?
- The teaching faculty member
- The Office of Records and Registration
- The respective Office of the Dean
-
Can I view the student members of the distribution list?
Yes, if you are using OWA or Outlook on campus. Click the + next to the list name to expand it.
-
What is the name of my class distribution list?
The naming convention is: [SUBJECT_CATALOG_SECTION_TERM] Example: ACCT_201_T01_1072

How do I send a message to a class distribution list if I don’t know the name? (On campus)
Using Outlook on campus:- Create a new e-mail.
- Click the To button. The Global Address List is displayed.
- From that list you can scroll through the alphabetized addresses to find your class list and select it once you find it. Another option is to filter the addresses to find your class faster. To do that, look at the Address Book pull down menu in the top middle of the window. Click the menu to change it from Global Address List to the address list you want to view. The lists are organized into 4 groups: Business Classes, CLA Classes, FS Classes, Law Classes. Once you select the group, it will display only lists in that group. You'll then locate your class and select it.
-
Can I use the class lists if I use OWA?
Yes. The instructions to view available lists using Outlook Web Access will differ slightly depending upon browser choice:- Log on to the MyUB Portal to access your e-mail account.
- Create a new message.
- Search for available distribution lists by typing the first few characters (for example, CMAT) in the “To:” box and select the “check names” icon (displayed as a head with a check mark to the right).
- Firefox users, click on the text in the “To:” box after the font turns red. A list of available names matching the search criteria will be displayed.
- Internet Explorer users will see the list of names display automatically. Select the name of the list you wish to send to and click “OK”.
-
Can I use the class lists with a POP/IMAP client?
When using a POP/IMAP client, and also using the ubalt.edu SMTP gateway (outgoing mail server), you may send a message to your class distribution list, assuming you already know the exact name of the list [example: CMAT_303_001_1072]. Add @ubalt.edu to the list name.
Limitations:
You cannot query the Exchange server for available distribution lists when using a POP/IMAP client (i.e. the instructions above will not work).
-
Can I use the class list if I use a web e-mail client or a different ISP?
If you use a non-UB server for outgoing mail, you cannot send to any UBalt distribution list. This protects our distrubution lists from being spammed by outside attacks.
