'it was truly inspirational'

With a clear understanding that reentry into public life is a key step for incarcerated persons, The University of Baltimore's Career and Internship Center, along with the Second Chance College Program that is part of the College of Public Affairs, lent support for the Jessup Correctional Institute's Father Dance, held on April 30 at JCI. More than a dozen qualified men spent the evening with their children, spouses and families, enjoying music, dance, a meal and socializing.

The Career and Internship Center helped set up the event, with UBalt employees (including President Kurt L. Schmoke) raising $1,000 to provide decorations and the Career Closet coordinating clothing donations.

"It was truly inspirational to watch the fathers enjoy this moment with their children," said Dr. Lakeisha Mathews, director of the CIC.

Various organizations provided formal wear, hair care and more to make the event an important step in supporting these fathers as they return to their communities.

"Events like these remind us of the power of family connection and the impact meaningful moments can have on rehabilitation, healing, and hope for the future," the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services noted in a social media post.
