University of Baltimore President Kurt L. Schmoke received the Speaker's Medallion—presented each year to a Maryland citizen who has made an outstanding contribution to the state—during a ceremony led by Maryland House Speaker Joseline Peña-Melnyk in the State House on March 27.
The presentation was part of Peña-Melnyk's annual hosting of the Speaker's Society Awards, a slate of honors given to "a group of amazing and dedicated legislators and leaders," according to Del. Heather Bagnall.
The Speaker's Medallion is presented to a Maryland citizen who has made an outstanding contribution to the state. It's one of two awards established in memory of Thomas Kennedy, a former member of the House, for his courageous stand on principle. The Speaker's Medallion has been presented nearly every year since 1995.
