Criminal Justice:

M.S. Graduate Program

The master's degree program in Criminal Justice assists the student in comprehending the overarching concepts of criminal justice. To achieve these objectives, the program is designed to:

  • Broaden the student's knowledge of the entire justice system and process.
  • Teach the student how to integrate knowledge and evaluate scientific and scholarly literature.
  • Develop the student's skills in the planning, implementation, and analysis of criminal justice programs.
To be admitted to the graduate program the candidate must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 2.8 GPA on a 4 point scale. Applicants are also required to have a personal interview with the Graduate Program Director and provide two letters of recommendation. Students must also have successfully completed undergraduate courses in Statistics and Criminological Theory.

The Master's of Science degree may be completed through one of two plans:

Plan I, an option of 30 credits and successful completion of a thesis for six credits, for a total of 36 credits.

Plan II, 36 credits and a written comprehensive examination. Under either plan the student must complete 18 credits of graduate Criminal Justice course work at the University of Baltimore with at least one course in each of the three Criminal Justice components: law enforcement, courts, and corrections.

The Criminal Justice CORE consists of five courses required of all students. These courses are:

  • Administration of Justice
  • Research Methods
  • Statistics
  • Advanced Criminology
  • Planning
In addition, students may specialize in Law Enforcement, Courts or Corrections by taking 9 credit hours in one of these areas.

In any event, the Graduate Program Director or an advisor designated by the Director will approve each student's course selection. For more information, contact Dr. Cindy J. Smith at (410) 837-6087 or cjsmith@ubalt.edu
