To provide a stimulating learning environment which maximizes individual potential and ensures that students of all ability levels are well  equipped to meet the challenges of education, work and life.

MISSION STATEMENT - DSS

The Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) ensures that every student can achieve his/her academic potential unhindered by his/her disabilities. We break down barriers to academic success stemming from students' disabilities and from the limits they or others would impose on them. We empower our students to acquire the life-skills they need for learning and personal success and to become active contributors to their community. The DSS Office assists the University in ensuring that UB is a welcome place for all persons with disabilities, whether they are members of the University community or outside guests.

 To accomplish this mission, we:

* assure students are provided appropriate adjustments and support to facilitate access to UB's academic excellence;

* validate student need as required under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), reviewing and assessing medical documentation and determining appropriate, necessary accommodations and support;

* address UB community attitudes regarding disability, encouraging acceptance and dispelling myths - demonstrating that our students should be judged on the basis of ability, not disability;

* encourage the use of and make available the training for assistive technology towards attaining academic distinction

* provide referrals as deemed necessary in an attempt to support and promote a well-balanced life outside of UB in terms of work and personal achievement

* support UB's Office of Human Resources by providing advice and assistance with employee accommodations; and,

* assist UB's Office of Facilities Management with design suggestions to make UB facilities more accessible.
