Sonce Reese, a graduate student in the Global Affairs and Human Security program at the University of Baltimore, is the winner of a prestigious Newman Civic Fellow award. It was established to honor student leaders dedicated to creating lasting change and building a better world.
Reese received the accolade from Campus Compact, which has established her as a 2016 Newman Civic Fellow, one 218 student leaders in the program.
"It is an amazing honor to be selected for such a prestigious award," Reese said. "I am truly grateful to be a part of the UB family and for the support and encouragement that I've received along the way."
Reese is a graduate assistant in UB's School of Criminal Justice, and serves as leader of several key organizations, including the Forensic Science Society (vice president), the National Society of Leadership Success (vice president), and P.A.D. - Pre-Law UB Chapter (vice president). She also was a graduate teaching assistant for UB's fall 2015 "Divided Baltimore" class. Reese plans to graduate from the Global Affairs and Human Security program in 2017.
Reese has "a strong and inspiring vision for community change in Baltimore, and a vision to improve neighborhoods and increase home ownership," said UB President Kurt L. Schmoke. "Her efforts include working on a project with Civic Works to address zoning issues, and working with city officials to write policy to reduce vacants, increase home ownership, and eliminate blight in neighborhoods. These grassroots efforts demonstrate Sonce's commitment to the Baltimore community as well as her UB community."
