Elizabeth M. Nix, associate professor in the Division of Legal, Ethical and Historical Studies in the University of Baltimore’s Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of this year's UB President’s Faculty Award. Prof. Nix will be honored at a luncheon during the fall 2016 semester.
Prof. Nix is renowned for her scholarship in urban history—specifically the history of Baltimore. Her lecture on the city's racial and class-oriented strife was a highlight of last fall's publicly accessible "Divided Baltimore: How Did We Get Here? Where Do We Go?" class; she has since presented it in numerous public venues, where it has received strong accolades for its insights and impact.
The President's Faculty Award selection committee's assessment included the following statement: "Dr. Betsy Nix seamlessly integrates her engaged teaching, public history scholarship, community engagement and service. … Her scholarship on the history of Baltimore has drawn national attention, which highlights the relevance of her work to many urban areas in the [United States] experiencing racial tensions. In the best tradition of public history, Dr. Nix's historical perspective has been sought out in the pursuit of solutions to issues surrounding our urban cities, especially the city of Baltimore."
