The University of Baltimore's continuing efforts to expand educational opportunities and access to students from Baltimore City has received a significant boost from Patricia and Mark Joseph through The Shelter Foundation, which has committed to fund as many as six scholarships for full-time city-based students who are newly enrolled at UB. Beginning this fall, the need-based program will be available for qualified incoming students, with special consideration provided to those who are part of UB's Dual Enrollment program.
"For students just starting out, especially those who are first-generation college-going, a scholarship opportunity like this will provide the crucial difference regarding success," said Kurt Schmoke, president of the University of Baltimore. "College affordability is an issue, but what is really at stake is the long-term prospects of many of Baltimore's young people. Their ability to participate in a workforce that will demand skills that are a part of a quality college education, will determine Baltimore's prospects going into the second half of the 21st century."
"Assisting Baltimore City school children go to college and stay there is a prime focus for us. We're pleased to support UB with this mission. And, under President Schmoke we have confidence the University will get the job done," said Mark Joseph, president of The Shelter Foundation.
Since 2009, the University of Baltimore has offered two ways for city high school students to begin their college careers: Dual Enrollment and the College Readiness Academies. Hundreds of students from local high schools have participated in these programs, and many have continued on to college?often experiencing academic success that outstrips their previous school performance.
Having completed their work in one of the College Readiness Academies, UB's Dual Enrollment students are placed in college-level writing and math courses over a 15-week period while they continue as high-school juniors and seniors. They can earn up to 12 college credits in various courses at UB, while receiving academic coaching and advising.
