In a celebration of the University of Baltimore community's literary work, Skelter—a student-produced journal for UB writers—will host a release party, featuring readings by a selection of the journal's contributors, on Monday, May 14, at 7 p.m., in the Bogomolny Room on the fifth floor of the Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of Skelter will be available for purchase.
Skelter was first conceptualized in fall 2014, when Welter, UB's historic literary journal, was put in the care of the M.F.A. in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts program. The first edition was assembled the following spring. Each year since, Skelter has been curated by undergraduate students enrolled in the Publication and Performance course, who seek work exclusively from within the UB community. Students, alumni, faculty, and staff are all encouraged to submit works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art.
This year's editorial team was guided by Prof. Betsy Boyd, with help from graduate assistant Zoraida Diaz, whose photography was selected by the class for the cover.
"It's been a lot of fun working with everyone in the Publication and Performance class," says Prof. Boyd of the semester-long experience. "The good energy they started with has transformed into true professionalism. Our staff knows how to select great literary submissions, edit a journal, organize and throw a reading, and via performance study, they know what it's like on the receiving end of a microphone as well. What a cool experience for all of us."
