Pending state legislation that would incentivize a four-day workweek for Marylanders may pass, given the high degree of support for the central idea, says Lisa Stickney, professor of management in The University of Baltimore's Merrick School of Business.
Speaking to CNBC's Make It program, Prof. Stickney says the bill has "a lot of grassroots support and has been put forth by a number of our delegates."
The proposed legislation provides incentives for both private and public employers to try a shorter work schedule, from 40 hours down to 32, to determine if workplace productivity can remain steady. Pay and benefits would remain stable, according to CNBC's coverage.
Prof. Stickney says the pandemic heightened interest in a four-day work schedule.
"The bottom line is, people need relief. Research shows performance and productivity go up when you're rested," she says. "Everyone needs a mental break."
