Ian Power, assistant professor and director of the Arts Production and Management program at The University of Baltimore, as well as a noted composer, will have his new major work for orchestra premiered by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra during the upcoming Tectonics Glasgow Festival in Scotland on Sunday, April 30. Conductor Ilan Volkov will lead the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Power's BYE BYE LOVE as part of the closing concert of the festival, alongside music by Margaret Hoenderdos, William Dougherty, and Ingrid Laubrock.
This new work, Power's first for symphony orchestra, is a 16-minute composition featuring virtuosic passages, gradual changes in volume, and sharp shifts in modulation. While the work tests the stamina of both musicians and audience, it "brings a loving, rapturous clarity in its insistence," Power says.
Prof. Power has had recent performances of his work in Denmark and Japan. Last year, he produced a four-show festival in Baltimore dedicated to composer Alvin Lucier.
Tectonics Glasgow, the BBC SSO's festival of experimental music, will celebrate 10 years of groundbreaking music this April. Co-curated by the orchestra's principal guest conductor, Volkov, and Alasdair Campbell, the festival has premiered 51 new works for orchestra since 2013. Highlights are broadcast on BBC Radio 3 each year, and select works are available for viewing after the festival on the BBC website.
Ian Power received his Ph.D. in composition from Harvard University in 2015; he also holds degrees in composition from the University of California, San Diego and Ithaca College. He has served as UBalt's director of the Arts Production and Management since 2017, where he won a Distinguished Teaching Award. His first two recorded collections, Diligence and Maintenance Hums, received praise from experimental music outlets. His next recording will be Ave Maria: Variations on a Theme by Giacinto Scelsi, to be released later this year.
