Jane Delury, professor of creative writing and English in The University of Baltimore's Klein Family School of Communications Design and director of the University's B.A. in English program, is publishing her second novel, Hedge, on June 6. The story of a garden historian from California who takes her daughter to spend a summer at a Hudson Valley estate, Hedge is receiving significant praise from book critics and Delury's fellow writers:
"With language as lush as the setting, Delury pulls readers into a thicket of lust, responsibility, and betrayal that they won't want to escape," says Oprah Daily, including Hedge in its list of Best Books of Spring 2023.
"A beautiful exploration of the inherent tension between motherhood and desire. Transfixing and utterly rewarding," says Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Spectacular.
"This novel about the challenges of parenting a troubled teen while trying to pursue a career will wrap you in captivating, high-stakes drama," says People Magazine, naming Hedge one of its Best Books for Summer 2023.
Other media are also weighing in, including The Washington Post, Kirkus Reviews, WYPR, and Baltimore Fishbowl.
Shortly after the book's publication, Delury wrote a piece for The Los Angeles Times about her father and her California childhood.
Delury's debut, The Balcony, received the 2019 American Academy of Arts and Letters Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction. She has received a PEN/O. Henry Prize, the F. Scott Fitzgerald Story Award, a VCCA fellowship, and grants from the Maryland State Arts Council. Delury's fiction has appeared in publications including Narrative, The Southern Review, The Yale Review, Glimmer Train, and elsewhere.
