Tutoring
Over half of the students seeking tutoring have GPA's of 3.0 and above.
In order for you to get the most from your tutoring experience, we ask you to first register for service. We’ll learn about your needs while you’ll learn what tutors can and cannot do during a tutoring session. Please contact the Academic Resource Center at 410.837.5383 or at arc@ubalt.edu for more information.
What Tutors Can Do For You
- Help clarify confusing parts of a lecture or text
- Help you solve problems by suggesting possible approaches or solving similar problems
- Give you comments or advice on papers-in-progress; illustrate how to correct grammatical or structural problems using similar examples (writing consultants).
What Tutors Can't Do
- Solve problems for you
- Correct your grammar or punctuation
- Help you with take-home tests
- Repeat the classroom lecture for you
- Help you with a course you are NOT currently enrolled in. (Ask about other resources.)
Meeting With a Tutor
- You can meet a tutor on campus, by e-mail, over the phone and or fax.
- We encourage you to reserve tutoring time up to 7 days in advance, especially during exams. If you don't have an appointment and you're looking for assistance in writing or math/statistics, you may also be able to get drop-in help.
Making an Appointment
- You may reserve as much as two hours of individual tutoring per week.
- For tutors with regular office hours, call 410.837.5383 to make an appointment. If no appointment is available when you need it, ask to be put on a waiting list in the event another student cancels.
- Other tutors are “on call.” Call 410.837.5383 and you will be given a tutor's name, number, and/or e-mail to contact for an appointment. If you meet in-person, we encourage you and the tutor to meet in the ARC, but you are welcome to meet elsewhere at any mutually convenient time.
- You can also request a tutor online.
- If you can't make your appointment, you must notify us at least 4 hours in advance. If you are NOT meeting in the ARC, you must notify the tutor directly. If you miss two appointments during a semester without giving adequate notice, you will not be allowed to make further appointments during the semester.
How To Get The Most Out Of Tutoring
- Check the course catalog to be sure you've had all prerequisite courses.
- Tell the tutor or receptionist what specific topics—not just the course name—you want help with.
- Read assignments and attempt homework problems beforehand; for writing tutoring, bring papers/assignments with you.
- Be prepared to ask specific questions
- Bring your textbook/workbook. Tutors don't always have current ones.
- Let us know if a tutor is unable to help you for any reason. We may need to hire additional tutors
- Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us!
