CIS-L was created in March, 1994, and had 950 members when it was migrated to the Web in January, 1998. CIS-L is an academic and practitioner forum for discussions on careers in information systems, both from a business and computer science perspectives. Before it moved to the Web 50% were academic members, 40% were practitioners and 10% were students (BS,MS,Ph.D.). The discussion varies from career trends, curriculum, placement, (but not job openings or applications, nor any sort of commercial messages), etc. Also, people bring their professional problems and look for suggestions from other members in a variety of topics. To see the last survey done as a mailing list of members' interests and background send to CIS-FSERV@UBE.UBALT.EDU the one-line message: SEND GENERAL.SURVEY, or click here. CIS-L also maintained a data repository to facilitate data exchange through e-mail and gopher. See CIS-L Fileserver for more details. This service will be maintained with the existing files for one more year (up to March 1999).
CIS-L is a web conference board located at a public institution. Therefore CIS-L has its use restricted to scientific and professional knowledge exchange -- no commercial posting is allowed. If you need to know precisely what is and what is not allowed please send to FILESERV@UBE.UBALT.EDU the message:
SEND NETWORK_POLICY.CREN
SEND NETWORK_POLICY.NSFNET
The first file was the acceptable use policy of the Bitnet, and the second of the Internet. In case of doubt of the nature of a posting please contact the CIS-L Editor at abento@ubmail.ubalt.edu . These policies are used as basic rules of conduct, although neither are more in force in the Internet.
