What is History Day?
National History Day, is the nations' leading history education program for students in grades six through twelve. Maryland's
History Day Program is the state component of National History Day.
During the school year more than 600.000 students, including several thousand in Maryland, engage in extensive,
independent research of historical materials to prepare original musum-type exhibits, dramatic performances, documentaries,
and papers related to a national theme. The 1999 National History Day Theme,"Science, Technology, Invention in History: Impact, Influence, Change."
Young people demonstrate their knowledge at history fairs and competitions, held during the winter and spring months,
advancing from local and regional contests to Maryland History Day, the state competition.
Junior and Senior student advancers from Maryland History Day can enter National History Day, the week-long contest
which is held each June at the University of Maryland, College Park. History Day showcases and rewards the finest
student scholarship in the country.
In many states, History Day programs are an integral part of social studies education. Activities and workshops for teachers focus on ways to improve classroom instruction and meet standards for history instruction. Curriculum
materials promote innovative approaches to teaching history.
History Day builds bridges among teachers, historians, and cutural institutions. businesses also provide tangible
support for programs, recognizing History Day's many benefits to their communities.

Maryland's History Day Program
The University of Baltimore is the headquarters for History Day in Maryland. Maryland's History Day Program is supported by a grant
from Columbia Gas of Maryland.
Goals for the program include:
- Elevating the history discipline in Maryland schools through rigorous academic study and creative
expression.
- Using humanities education to make stronger communities and informed citizens.
- Assisting schools in meeting standards for outcome based education.
Communities can become involved in History Day by:
- Particpating in regiaonl training activities.
- Sharing resources and ideas for History Day with students and teachers.
- Mentoring students as they research, produce, and reflect on their projects.
- Volunteering to serve as judges at local and regional competitions.
- Sponsoring incentives and awards for students and teachers at all levels of competition.
