University of Baltimore President Kurt L. Schmoke is one of six local luminaries featured in the January 2023 edition of Baltimore Magazine, in a cover story titled "The Bold and the Brilliant." Schmoke, who served three terms as Baltimore's first elected Black mayor before arriving at UBalt in 2014, is joined by Librarian of Congress and former Pratt Library chief Carla Hayden, former Oriole and Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, legendary filmmaker John Waters, former U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, and acclaimed visual artist Joyce Scott in the article.
"Together, they are a set of extraordinarily accomplished, yet completely different personalities," the article says, "by turns provocative, principled, cerebral, compassionate, feisty, funny, resilient, self-deprecating, over-the-top, and—the qualities closest to the hearts of Baltimoreans—loyal and unpretentious.
"They each charted a unique, purposeful, and often applecart-upsetting path."
Former City Health Commissioner Peter Beilenson, who served in Schmoke's mayoral administration beginning in 1992, recalls the latter's "prescient" views on drug policy, and labels him "one of the most influential national politicians of the past 30 years."
"It was very easy to work for Mayor Schmoke," Beilenson writes. "Unlike some politicians who followed whatever way the wind was blowing, the science and data behind an issue was all that mattered to him."
