The Systems Administrator III serves as a subject matter expert for the Infrastructure Team in developing, supporting, and maintaining a stable technology environment that meets the overall technology needs of the University. The Infrastructure Team is responsible for many enterprise services. The position will design, implement, and maintain multiple technology services managed by the Infrastructure Team. The incumbent serves as a primary resource for most services, and acts as a secondary for others. The position performs as a technical lead on projects, performs monitoring and maintenance of services, offers guidance to other engineers, ensures reliability and security of services, and provides quality customer support. This position adheres to policies and standards ensuring these technologies meet the needs of the campus community by providing quality of service in performance and reliability. In conjunction with the Manager of Infrastructure Services, this position coordinates system maintenance and upgrades, and engages with management to forecast possible future technology needs.

Key Functions/Responsibilities/Tasks:
Technology Management and Administration: This position oversees, recommends, and assists in the design, development and implementation of relevant strategies, technologies, and documentation to support the technology needs of the University.
• Verifies all aspects of service implementation, configuration, management, support, and upgrades for technology services are per UBalt standards
• Provides recommendations to management to improve service offerings or to improve efficiencies
• Supports service offerings so they remain capable, modern, reliable, and secure.
• Works with management to ensure appropriate metrics are being collected and to create meaningful trending and forecasting reports
• Remains current with all technologies and industry-related practices related to UBalt technology services
• Develops and maintains scripts and other automation as appropriate
Operations and Support: Provides oversight of daily operations of the technology infrastructure and works closely with team members to support our user community as well as support our technology environments.
• Serves in an operational capacity as primary or secondary administrator for assigned technology services, including performing standard service operations that includes system patching, upgrades, and monitoring
• Actively takes part in level 2 and 3 troubleshooting of technology issues
• Provides expertise and guidance to other administrators as appropriate
• Performs recurring tasks as assigned
• Processes service requests in agreed-upon timeframes with a focus on providing quality customer service
• Where appropriate, assists other teams in the Office of Technology Services (OTS) or across the campus
• Provides on-call and off-hour maintenance and monitoring
• Assists with other technology support as required
• Creates or updates support tickets
Project Technical Leadership and Guidance: This position is responsible for leading projects and supporting fellow team members with the focus on meeting SLA requirements.
• Serves as the technical lead on assigned projects
• Provides consulting services to project managers
• Leads and coordinate projects and efforts
• Provides technical mentoring to junior team members
• May check work of others as well as cross train team members
Communications, Education and Documentation: Focus on maintaining good documentation and communicate issues to management as well as fellow team members. Stay up to date on industry technologies that benefit the University.
• Assists in the development of service standards and maintenance procedures
• Maintains inventory and service contracts for all infrastructure hardware and software
• Maintains up-to-date engineering-level documentation
• Provides team cross-training
• Participates in peer collaboration that includes networking within the education and corporate sector to understand how others are addressing issues and managing similar services
• Communicates and documents changes to technology services following defined procedures
• Communicates with management about issues that will delay delivery dates, or which may affect the reliability, security, performance of the technology environment
• Documents time devoted to work tasks
• Stays up to date on industry technologies and trends
• Communicates service outages following defined procedures
• Provides mentorship and leadership to other systems administrators
Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree
Required Experience:
Five years of progressively responsible experience in server administration. Experience in the installation and troubleshooting of server and NAS hardware components
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Technology or a related field
Preferred Experience:
• Eight or more years of experience in server administration
• Experience providing instruction, training, or leading workshops on technology
• Experience working in a higher education environment
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to provide technology support in person, via phone, or online
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 products including Exchange, SharePoint, Teams
• This position requires an understanding of the policies and standards in place at the University of Baltimore, the ability to explain and provide training on technology concepts, and the ability to write clear and concise documentation.
• Effective oral and written communication skills. Strong customer-centric focus.
• Critical thinking skills and excellent organizational and prioritization skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks and job functions.
• Experience with system design and systems administration tasks, including server security, server clustering technologies, performance and capacity management, system recovery and backups, and system monitoring.
• Outstanding knowledge of Microsoft Windows server operating system and technologies (such as IIS).
• Excellent knowledge of Active Directory and VMWare.
• Strong knowledge of system/network security concepts and best practices.
• Ability to interact with colleagues and stakeholders.
• Strong experience with Microsoft Office 365 (or Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Teams and SharePoint).
• Ability to effectively communicate with management and colleagues of issues and make recommendations.
• Ability to lift 80 pounds.
Preferences:
• Windows and Linux server operating systems.
• Windows and MacOS operating systems.
• SCCM, SCOM, Microsoft Deployment Tools, Active Directory, and Group policies.
• Physical/virtual server and storage management.
• Scripting, programming and automation tools.
• Microsoft Azure services and/or Amazon Web Services.
• Microsoft SQL Server.
• Google Apps (G Suite).
• Technical certifications in related disciplines.
