Duo is the University of Baltimore's solution for multi-factor authentication
All UBalt faculty and staff must use multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log into university resources that use Single Sign-on (SSO). Some major applications that use SSO are Office365, Salesforce, Sakai, and OmniUpdate. Security restrictions click here

What is multi-factor authentication?
Multi-factor authentication requires the use of two of the three authentication factor categories: something you know, something you have, and something you are. This adds a layer of security because hackers will need more than just a password to use your accounts. In order to log in, you will need:
- Your netID and password
- Either a mobile device, a phone that can receive voice calls, or a one-time use code
-
What devices are supported by Duo?
Devices include iPhone, Android, Apple Watch, Windows Phone, and Other Cell Phones & Landlines.
-
How should I enroll if my phone does not support the Duo app?
When enrolling, choose the “Landline” option. You can enter your cell phone or landline number. If you enter a cell phone number, you can receive a phone call or a text message. If you enter a landline number, you will receive a phone call.
-
What authentication options are available?
There are 4 authentication options available:
- (easiest and recommended) Duo Mobile app Push
The mobile app will prompt you to Accept or Deny authentication when clicking the Push button for Duo protected systems, then sign you in. - Phone Call
Duo will call the phone you enrolled, prompting you to hang up or press any key to sign in. Please note that these calls may come in as Unknown on caller ID. - SMS (text)
Duo will send you a 7 digit one-time passcode that you will need to manually enter where prompted. - (not recommended) Hardware Token
Hardware Tokens are physical devices that you will need to have with you to sign in. When prompted for a passcode, you will need to use the token to get the one-time passcode and enter it manually. Please note that if these hardware tokens are lost, stolen, or run out of batteries, a new one will need to be set up.
- (easiest and recommended) Duo Mobile app Push

What should I expect after enrolling?
When logging into certain UBalt systems, you will be prompted for MFA. There are several ways in which you could be prompted which was chosen during enrollment. The two-factor authentication could be a push notification from the app, a text message, or a phone call. Please note that your experience may vary when logging in to each system

What major systems will I need to use multi-factor authentication to access?
Listed below are some of the major applications and systems requiring MFA. There are other applications that require MFA, and more may be added at a later date. At that time campus will be notified.
