Celebrating the Publication of the New Oxford Handbook of Women and International Law
Professor Nienke Grossman, a leading scholar of feminist approaches to international law at the University of Baltimore School of Law, continues to shape global conversations about gender, justice, and the power of international legal institutions.
Grossman’s scholarship is newly showcased in the recently released Oxford Handbook of Women and International Law, an ambitious and globally collaborative volume she co-edited. Reflecting on the project, Grossman said, “This book has been a years-long and deeply collaborative effort. It was a privilege to co-edit this volume with J. Jarpa Dawuni Esq., Ph.D., Jaya Ramji-Nogales, and Hélène RUIZ FABRI, and to have contributions from authors of many different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives from around the world.”
The handbook examines multiple domains of international law through feminist and gendered perspectives and interrogates emerging threats to equality, including climate change and the rise of populism. Together, the volume’s contributions offer a comprehensive look at both the limits and the promise of international law to advance justice for women and girls worldwide.
As a Professor of Law and co-director of UBalt Law’s Center for International and Comparative Law, Grossman brings this expertise to her teaching, research, and public service. Her experiences include serving on the Organization of American States’ Inter-American Juridical Committee, holding leadership roles within the American Society of International Law, advising the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the DPRK, and providing expert guidance to states litigating before the International Court of Justice.
Grossman’s leadership on this landmark project reflects the broader strength of UBalt Law’s faculty, whose scholarship informs public discourse, shapes policy, and contributes to communities locally, nationally, and globally. Her work is one powerful example of how UBalt Law professors are advancing knowledge and driving meaningful impact across the legal landscape.
