At the RLB Library’s Special Collections & Archives, student workers are an essential part of our mission. They help us preserve UBalt’s history while gaining practical experience that supports their academic and professional goals. These projects aren’t just about scanning photos or organizing materials, they are about connecting students to the university’s story and giving them skills that carry into their future careers.
One of those students is Sumera Zaki, a senior undergraduate majoring in Legal Studies, who has worked with the archives team for several semesters. Her dedication and attention to detail have made a lasting impact on our collections, and her story reflects how “behind the stacks” experiences benefit both the archives and UBalt’s students.
As part of our “Behind the Stacks” series, we are sharing Sumera’s reflections in her own words.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Sumera Zaki, and I’m a senior undergraduate majoring in Legal Studies. I chose this field because I’m passionate about making a tangible difference in society and helping others. As an aspiring law student, I’m currently preparing for law school admissions and am grateful to the University of Baltimore for supporting my journey.
What kind of projects did you work on while in the archives?
In summer 2024, I began working with the archives department, which has been a deeply
fulfilling experience. I’ve been involved in scanning and transferring historic campus
photos an eye opening task that has helped me appreciate the university’s rich history.
What new skills did you learn while working with us?
This work taught me the value of focus, patience, and attention to detail, while also
connecting me to the evolution of the education system.
Was there a particular project that stood out to you or felt especially meaningful?
I’m proud to contribute to preserving these memories and recommend this opportunity
to students interested in history.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience with Special Collections
& Archives?
Under the guidance of the archives team, who make the learning process smooth and
inspiring, the environment remains warm, well-organized and flexible, including remote
options. Archival work is not only educational but personally rewarding.
Sumera’s story highlights how student workers strengthen the work we do in Special
Collections & Archives while gaining valuable experience that supports UBalt’s student
success goals. Each student who joins our team helps preserve the university’s legacy
while building their own.
We are grateful for Sumera’s contributions over multiple semesters and proud to be part of her journey as she prepares for law school and beyond.
