The IACL brings together jurists and scholars from around the world

UBalt Law is thrilled to announce that Professor Mortimer Sellers has been elected a titular member, and Professor Ioanna Tourkochoriti an associate member, of the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL). This prestigious election recognizes the exceptional scholarship and contributions of our faculty to the field of comparative law.

Established in The Hague in 1924, the IACL is one of the world’s foremost institutions dedicated to the comparative study of legal systems. Its founding reflected a post-World War I renaissance in law and underscored The Hague’s longstanding role as a global symbol of peace through law, also reflected in the Permanent Court of International Justice and the Academy of International Law.
The IACL brings together jurists and scholars from around the world, fostering international collaboration and producing publications that span all legal systems and disciplines. Unlike its sister organization, the Academy of International Law, the IACL focuses on comparative legal research across all areas of law.

Election to the IACL is a rare honor. The Academy evaluates candidates based on the quality and impact of their scholarship, voting annually to select those who have made outstanding contributions to the field.

The IACL convenes its General Congress every four years, bringing together scholars to explore diverse legal traditions and contemporary legal challenges. The next Congress will be held in Berlin in 2026, continuing a century-long tradition of promoting cross-border dialogue, methodological innovation, and the exchange of legal knowledge.

In addition to his titular membership of the Academy, Professor Sellers is Vice-President of the American Society of Comparative Law (ASCL), Editor of ASCL Studies in Comparative Law, and co-editor of the International Encyclopedia of Comparative Law.

Professor Tourkochoriti is a member of the Executive Council of the ASCL and a book review editor for the American Journal of Comparative Law.

“We warmly congratulate Professors Sellers and Tourkochoriti on this distinguished recognition,” said Dean LaVonda N. Reed. “Their election not only honors their exceptional scholarship but also highlights our School’s ongoing contribution to the advancement of legal knowledge around the world.”
