The Honorable Anthony G. Brown, Maryland Attorney General will serve as the 2026 Commencement Speaker for the University of Baltimore School of Law.
Attorney General Brown is Maryland’s 47th Attorney General and the first African American to hold the office. A distinguished public servant, military leader, and advocate for justice and equity, he has served in both the legislative and executive branches of government
Before becoming Attorney General, he represented Maryland’s 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, served as Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor from 2007 to 2015, and served in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he was Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and Majority Whip from 1999 to 2007. Throughout his career, Attorney General Brown has championed expanded protections for victims of domestic violence, abused and neglected children, and veterans, as well as initiatives to increase expungement eligibility, promote ballot access, and protect LGBTQ rights.
Since taking office, Attorney General Brown has strengthened the Office of the Attorney General’s capacity to protect Marylanders and uphold the rule of law. He established the Office of Equity, Policy, and Engagement, successfully advanced legislation creating a new Civil Rights Division, and helped establish the Maryland Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention to improve coordination, reporting, and victim support statewide. He also launched the Attorney General’s Federal Accountability Unit (FAU) to ensure Maryland’s interests are fully represented in matters involving federal policy and enforcement—an effort that, in 2025 alone, included participation in more than 50 legal actions and helped protect billions of dollars in critical funding for the State. AG Brown is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, with a distinguished record of more than three decades of service as an aviator and Judge Advocate General.
Attorney General Brown recently shared insights and advice with the legal community at the 2025 Maryland State Bar Association Legal Summit. Reflecting on the demands of the profession, he offered guidance that will resonate deeply with our graduates as they begin their legal careers:
“Strike a balance, and commit to it. If you can’t do that as a young person, you will have difficulty doing it as an older, more experienced lawyer.”
We are honored to welcome Attorney General Brown to Commencement and look forward to the perspective, wisdom, and inspiration he will share with the Class of 2026.
Commencement will take place on May 21, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.
