'The Data Center Outrage': Panel Discussion, Oct. 14

What is AI costing us, today - and tomorrow?

"The Data Center Outrage: Can AI Survive Without Data Centers?," a panel discussion on the growing national movement against the construction of large-scale centers for high-volume AI web traffic, will take place at The University of Baltimore on Wednesday, Oct. 14, beginning at 7 p.m. ET in the H. Mebane Turner Learning Commons, 1415 Maryland Ave. This event, part of the Great Talk series, is free and open to the public. In addition to the in-person setting, a live Zoom event also will be available. Registration information is listed below.

Great Talk, Inc., a nonprofit organization, offered this description of the event: "Data centers are multiplying across the country—consuming electricity, water, and land at a scale few communities agreed to. Our panel takes on the question directly: what does AI actually cost us, and can it survive without this build-out?"

Panelists include:

• Dr. Jessica A. Stansbury, director of the University's Center for AI Learning and Community-Engaged Innovation and director of teaching and learning excellence for UBalt's Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Technology;
• Carl Braun, co-founder and CEO of the Data Center Group;
• Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen's Energy Program;
• Courtney C. Radsch, journalist and AI governance expert, will serve as moderator.
