Ken Malone, co-founder of Early Charm, a Baltimore-based venture studio with a mission to transform university inventions into successful commercial products, will lead a thinkUBator Workshop session on how ordinary people can safeguard their most valuable asset: their ideas. The online session, hosted by The University of Baltimore's Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI), will take place on Wednesday, April 8 beginning at 11 a.m. "Protect Your Ideas: A Workshop on Protecting Intellectual Property" is free and open to the public. Registration information is listed below.
As co-founder of Early Charm, presenter Ken Malone brings years of experience in transforming ideas into practical applications. Malone serves on multiple advisory boards, including the Investment Committee of Innovation Work's Ignite Capital Fund, Coppin State University's Polymer Program Industrial Advisory Board, and UBalt's Merrick School of Business Advisory Board. He regularly mentors entrepreneurs at institutions and organizations including the Maryland Institute College of Art, Open Works, the Novella Center for Entrepreneurship, and the Department of Energy's SBIR initiative. Malone holds a Ph.D. in polymer science, and has extensive experience in the heavy chemicals and plastics industry, where he specialized in manufacturing, marketing, product development, and mergers and acquisitions.
Regardless of the venture, intellectual property (IP) is likely among its most valuable assets. The workshop will explore the various types of intellectual property, including trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets. Participants will gain insights into when each form of protection is appropriate and how to leverage them to safeguard your business and innovations effectively.
The weekly thinkUBator Workshop series is designed to equip CEI member companies with the knowledge, tools, and resources they need—whether it's securing seed capital, finding strategic partners, building a team, or navigating marketing best practices—to turn their innovative ideas into successful ventures as swiftly as possible. The series is part of CEI-hosted programming aimed at fostering entrepreneurial learning and growth.
