Los Angeles-based writer Rachel Khong, author of the novel The Real Americans and the new collection of short stories, My Dear You, will visit The University of Baltimore on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., as The University of Baltimore's MFA in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts continues its fall authors series. The talk will take place in the Wright Theater on the top floor of the UBalt Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
Khong will be in a conversation about her life and work with Prof. Marion Winik, who teaches memoir writing in the MFA program. The presentation will be followed by a reception sponsored by UBalt's Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.
My Dear You is a brilliant collection of stories about love, life, and the anguish of becoming oneself. Khang's stories go deep beneath the surface, touching on the particular awkwardness of being a person who is dating in their thirties, while considering the meaning of a woman's Asian identity, the label "American," and beyond. characters stop to consider interventions from the supernatural, the earthly, the robotic, and the immortal.
Khong is the author of Goodbye, Vitamin, winner of the California Book Award for First Fiction. Real Americans, her second novel, was a New York Times best seller. In 2018, she founded The Ruby, a work and event space for women and nonbinary writers and artists in San Francisco's Mission District. With friends, she teaches creative writing as part of the The Dream Side collective.
