Betsy Yarrison received her Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin in 1972 and began her career at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. With brief intervening stints at Rutgers University and Educational Testing Service, she has taught at the University of Baltimore since 1975.
She is the author of two advanced writing textbooks and several articles on later nineteenth-century English literature, as well as a number of articles on honors education for non-traditional students and other less advantaged college populations. She is a fellow of the National Collegiate Honors Council.
