Ed graduated from the Maryland Institute in 1955. From December, 1956 to April, 1991, he worked at the Barton-Gillet Company in Baltimore, Maryland as Executive Vice President and Creative Director. Over the course of his career he received more than 400 major design awards. He is the author of numerous articles on design and the design profession as well as three books including “The Business of Graphic Design” which was named by Critique magazine as one of the 82 greatest books on design ever written. Past president/original founder of Maryland Institute College of Art Alumni Association. Past President of the Baltimore Chapter of AIGA. In 1989, after having taught as an adjunct instructor for 8 years, Gold left Barton-Gillet to take a position at the University of Baltimore, where he currently teaches in their Publications Design graduate program. In October of 2001 he was appointed to the position of Director of the Ampersand Institute for Words & Images. In 2003 he was named Director of the MFA in Integrated Design, a position he stepped down from in 2012 to become the director of the Graduate Internship Program in the SCD. In 2005 he assumed the duties of curator of the Gallery in UB’s Student Center. Since 1993 he has served an official for the South Atlantic Boxing Association. In 2008 he was honored by the Baltimore Chapter of AIGA as the first ever recipient of the AIGA Fellowship Award for his contributions to the design profession.
