Bob "PXG" Parsons Professor of Digital Communication, Commerce, and Culture

Education

Ph.D., University of Maryland
A.A., Baltimore City Community College
M.S., Bloomsburg University
B.A., Bloomsburg University

When I was in the fourth grade, my family went to EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World, and I knew from that moment what I wanted to do: create interactive experiences for families that made learning fun and included voices from different cultures around the world. Many years later, I now research ways that designers can work with their target audience to design new technologies used for education and entertainment together.

For the last several years, I've led UBalt's Center for Digital Communication, Commerce, and Culture.

Research in Progress

"AI + Co-Design" (On-Going)
Using collaborative tools to explore the use of AI as a possible co-designer. As of 2021, we have collected close to 20 participants.

"Design Researcher tools" (On-Going)
Working with students on tools to help designers do research at large scale.

"Fashion Design and Human-Centered Computing" (Planning)
I have begun exploring the intersection of HCI and Fashion Design.

"KidsteamUB" (Writing Results)
KidsteamUB, a pilot research project housed in the Division of Science, Information Arts, and Technologies (SIAT) within the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences (YGCAS) is an ongoing, urban-focused, intergenerational co-design team that designs new technologies for children with children. It is rooted in the Scandinavian philosophies of participatory design and based on the ongoing Kidsteam project at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). The group consists of 8 children ages 8-12 and 4 to 5 researchers (faculty and students) that work with outside partners to design and refine children's technologies through the use of low-tech prototyping tools, such as art supplies and drawing tools.

In Fall 2016, I changed the format for KidsteamUB to be one month long and only meet once a week. This was in response to the low numbers of children I was attracting to the study. We worked with National Public Radio (NPR) on the design of new technologies for children to listen to and share audio programming.

In March 2017, I expanded Kidsteam to be more inclusive to children in areas with low Social and Economic Standing. Instead of requiring children to come to the University of Baltimore, I worked with the Enoch Pratt Library System to have Kidsteam at the Forest Park Neighborhood branch. We worked for four weeks and developed technologies to help the kids be safe.

KidsTeamUB has been run in Enoch Pratt Libraries in Spring 2018 (Clifton Park Branch and Reisterstown Road Branch), Fall 2018 (Orleans Street Branch -- first librarian led one), Spring 2019 (Waverly Branch).

Spring 2020 was scheduled but postponed due to COVID-19 and was reconstituted in Fall 2020 as KidsTeam Online.
