Fundraising efforts for a new scholarship to honor the work of Lenneal J. Henderson, a nationally recognized professor and scholar from the University of Baltimore's College of Public Affairs, are now underway.
Henderson, who holds the title of distinguished professor emeritus in the college's School of Public and International Affairs, and who also serves as a senior research associate for UB's Schaefer Center for Public Policy and a senior fellow for the University's Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics, has public-policy expertise ranging from education policy to housing, and from energy management to environmental affairs. In 2005, he was named a fellow at the National Academy of Public Administration.
Prof. Henderson is widely known for his portrayal of a number of legendary black leaders, including Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and W.E.B. Du Bois, Maryland Congressman Parren Mitchell, and others.
In announcing the establishment of the scholarship fund in Henderson's name, College of Public Affairs Dean Roger Hartley said, "Last year, I offered a leadership gift toward this effort and this year I am doubling it. [The College of Public Affairs] needs more scholarships to attract and retain our students. The financial circumstances of our students leads to stop outs and some cannot return. While this is one scholarship and one effort to combat this problem, I hope very much that this will lead to more scholarships to aid our students."
