Jeffrey Ian Ross, professor in The University of Baltimore's School of Criminal Justice and a fellow in both UB School of Law's Center for International and Comparative Law and the Schaefer Center for Public Policy, is the 2020 winner of The John Keith Irwin Distinguished Professor Award, awarded by the American Society of Criminology's Division of Convict Criminology (DCC).
According to the DCC, the award recognizes outstanding scholarly, empirical or theoretical professional contributions by an individual to the study of Convict Criminology. Professional contributions can also include advocating for Convict Criminology as an area of scholarship within criminology and related disciplines, and mentoring graduate students. Furthermore, individuals who "have made substantial practical contributions to insider perspectives of criminal and deviant behavior also are eligible to receive this award."
Prof. Ross is one of the founders of Convict Criminology, a relatively new perspective in the practical field of criminal justice and the academic field of criminology. He is the co-editor of two books on the subject, including Convict Criminology for the Future, published last month. He has also published a number of books, journal articles, opinion pieces and more on the topics of criminology, the corrections field, law enforcement practices and related areas. Among his direct experiences in criminology, Prof. Ross worked for nearly four years in a correctional institution.
