Now entering its second year, The University of Baltimore's NextGen Leaders for Public Service program is proving highly attractive to students who are considering a career in government, community service or in the world of non-profit organizations. NextGen provides both UBalt credits and paid internship experiences for qualified juniors, seniors and graduate students (including law students) in a variety of public service careers.
So far, nearly 100 NextGen students from the University have been placed in dozens of sites, while this fall, nearly 70 more have applied, including 10 law students. Their internships average $15 per hour, with most ranging from 8-20 hours of work each week. The program's academic component includes an option for students from any major to sign up for a minor in public service at the undergrad level, or a non-credit certificate (undergrad or grad) in public service leadership. Co-curricular opportunities also are available.
"There is an ongoing employment crisis in every level of government, as well as in many non-profit organizations: Not enough trained, talented and highly skilled workers are ready to handle public-facing responsibilities," UBalt President Kurt L. Schmoke said in a message to the UBalt community. "NextGen prepares University of Baltimore students to take on those challenges."
Students who are interested in a rewarding and impactful career in the public-service sector are encouraged to get in touch with Pat Mikos, manager of the NextGen Leaders for Public Service program in the University's Schaefer Center for Public Policy.
