The University of Baltimore School of Law is a dynamic public institution with a commitment to community engagement and to advancing justice. The Director of Law Student Support is a critical part of the School of Law and its Office of Academic Affairs. The Director develops and implements academic policy and programming, including ensuring compliance with ABA-mandated policies, for JD day and evening and post-JD students. The Director of Law Student Support’s primary functions are academic advising and working to serve students with disabilities at the law school.
The position serves as a key liaison between students and other University Departments to assure student completion and success. This includes a critical partnership with the University’s Office of Disability and Access Services, to ensure that students with disabilities have appropriate reasonable accommodations to which they may be entitled. The Director plays an important role in providing academic advising, counseling, and support for law students, including those transferring to the School of Law. The Director helps students with difficult personal and social/emotional issues that may arise in the course of their studies and arranges appropriate solutions.

Key Responsibilities
Accommodations and Access to Learning
• Manage all aspects of the School of Law’s shared oversight for student accommodations with the Office of Disability and Access Services.
• Act a primary liaison to all students seeking accommodations with focus on preparing this population for success in the classroom, during exams, and after graduation in the working world.
• Publish information about the accommodations process for new/returning students and present to the student body during First-Year Orientation.
• Conduct initial intake meetings for students seeking accommodations and be available for continued meetings for advising throughout semester.
• Work collaboratively with the Office of Disability and Access Services during weekly meetings to a) discuss new and continuing students seeking, and with existing, accommodations, b) discuss faculty and implementation of accommodations, and c) discuss building facility needs to ensure delivery of reasonable accommodations to students.
• Manage accommodation agreements with Disability and Access Services team, including the Memorandum of Understanding between offices.
• Assist in maintaining law school policies related to accommodations and students with disabilities.
Academic Advising
• Advise all students (accommodated and non-accommodated) regarding academic decisions, including course plans for future semesters, requirements for joint degrees and concentrations, and bar readiness.
• Advise students and faculty regarding curriculum and degree requirements.
• Communicate with faculty concerning student issues.
• Field and resolve student concerns, problems, and complaints.
• Work closely with the transfer student population, conducting transfer audits and planning the August Transfer Orientation to coincide with First-Year Orientation.
• Review transfer student transcripts for acceptance of credits by UBalt.
• Perform and supervise degree audits prior to graduation.
• Coordinate and implement academic policies related to joint degree programs.
• Certify students for concentrations within JD program.
• Conduct initial reviews of student petitions for exceptions to academic requirements or policies.
• Meet with students on probation to help improve their academic performance including discussions about course loads, study habits, time management skills
Procedures and Programming
• Develop trainings for current students prior to midterm and final exams on exam software.
• Deliver presentation to first-year students preparing for registration in the spring of their 1L year.
• Create programming to inform faculty about specific needs for accommodated students, including implementation of reasonable accommodations at the law school.
• Develop and implement programming to improve the financial literacy and debt awareness of law students.
• Manage academic portion of School of Law website to ensure materials are up-to-date and meet all academic requirements.
• Assist in maintaining Student Handbook.
• Collaborate with other offices and resources on campus to develop and deliver innovative programming for law students that enhances academic success, resilience, and professionalism.
Exam Administration
• Act as head proctor during fall and spring final exams for all students.
• Sit on Exam Administration team and attend weekly planning meetings.
• Help manage coordination of exam and midterm scheduling for students with accommodations.
Required Education and Experience
Education: A Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field
Experience: Five years of progressively responsible work experience related to students seeking accommodations, student services, counseling, student advising, law practice, or similar fields.
Preferred Experience:
J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and course management platforms. Ability to learn new platforms such as those for exam and enrollment management (ExamSoft and PeopleSoft).
• Knowledge of laws governing privacy and confidentiality in higher education.
• Must have the skill to counsel and advise students regarding their academic issues with clarity, consistency, and sensitivity to other needs including the needs of differently-abled students.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders including students, faculty, and staff within the School of Law and university.
• Ability to manage difficult situations.
• Ability to understand, implement, and ensure compliance with academic policies and ABA requirements.
• Ability to work collaboratively with individuals across the law school and university to implement academic policy, plan academic events and ceremonies, and implement ADA accommodations for students.
• Ability to work independently in applying academic policies.
• Exceptional written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work well with a diverse population of both students, faculty, and fellow administrators.
• Demonstrated success in program management and collaborative leadership.
