Serving in the Office of the Bursar, within the Division of Administration and Finance, this position primarily provides support to cashiering. Performs financial recordkeeping duties associated with the processing of financial transactions on student accounts and departmental deposits, while maintaining all USM and State audit standards. Applies general accepted accounting procedures and prepares daily cashiering reports. Opens and distributes mail to staff within the Office of the Bursar. This position is critical in supporting the strategic goals of the University in providing excellent customer service to students, staff, and faculty; through handling financial transactions including the collection of funds, answering questions, and varies other customer service interactions. Receive and process payments from students, parents, faculty, and staff through the cashiering system. Types of transactions processed through the cash register include: student account payments, transcript requests, departmental deposits, MTA passes, various application fees, and workshop fees. Balances cashier drawer. Counts and reconciles money and other receipts.
Answer telephone, email, and in person inquiries from customers. Resolving customer inquiries include: reviewing student accounts, knowledge of Office of Bursar policies, provide excellent customer service, and some knowledge of other campus office’s policies. Maintains confidentiality of student records and other information.
Process payment files from a third party vendor, which contain electronic payments made to the university. These files ensure that all transactions processed electronically on behalf of the university have been properly applied to the appropriate student accounts.
Perform daily and weekly student account audits.
Required Education and Experience
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: One year of accounting clerical experience
Preferred Education and Experience
Education: Associate degree in Accounting, Business or related field
Experience: PeopleSoft experience and two years of cashiering experience
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of processing payments though a cashiering system; computer skills are also required including Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel, and Outlook. Strong organization skills. Ability to provide quality customer service. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, employees, and administration. The ability to work in a fast-paced (during peak periods), high volume, tight deadline environment. Attention to detail, organization skills, accounting clerical and cashiering.
