University of Baltimore Names Kalyan Singhal Inaugural Distinguished University Professor

The University of Baltimore and President Kurt L. Schmoke have conferred the prestigious title of Distinguished University Professor upon Dr. Kalyan Singhal, professor of innovation and supply-chain management in the Merrick School of Business. This appointment marks the first awarding of the University's highest academic rank for a tenured faculty member.

The University of Baltimore and President Kurt L. Schmoke have conferred the prestigious title of Distinguished University Professor upon Dr. Kalyan Singhal, professor of innovation and supply-chain management in the Merrick School of Business and a veteran educator and scholar. This appointment marks the first awarding of the University's highest academic rank for a tenured faculty member.

 

The title of Distinguished University Professor is bestowed upon faculty members who have demonstrated exceptional excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service, coupled with a consequential impact on their academic field and/or profession. It also acknowledges notable contributions to the well-being of the citizens of Baltimore City and the State of Maryland.

 

"I am delighted to make this historic appointment during the University's Centennial year of celebration," said President Schmoke. "Much like the UBalt's impact on the city and state, Dr. Singhal's many contributions have profound influence across multiple domains."

 

In his nomination letter, Merrick School of Business Dean Raju Balakrishnan lauded Dr. Singhal as being "among an extremely select group who make an immeasurable difference through their extraordinary commitment to and passion for the responsibility of their role."

 

Dr. Singhal's colleagues echoed this sentiment, with one noting his "decades of outsized impact in management research, education, and practice." External assessors further reinforced the significance of his contributions, describing him as a "builder, innovator, and one of the foremost contributors to the field of management science and operation management." One reviewer of Simghal's work noted that "Kalyan has made more contributions to the field and to the world of business than I can possibly count."

 

Prof. Singhal is a distinguished figure in the field of operations management and a driving force behind the advancement of scholarly research in the discipline. He is notably a founder of the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), a pivotal organization established in collaboration with approximately 300 professors and executives. POMS held its first international conference in Washington, D.C., in October 1990, and its flagship journal, Production and Operations Management, debuted in March 1992. Both actions marked significant milestones in the field.

 

Building upon his commitment to impactful research and extensive publishing experience, Prof. Singhal, in partnership with co-editors Wallace J. Hopp of the University of Michigan and Christopher Ittner of the University of Pennsylvania, launched the Management and Business Review (MBR) in 2020. This globally oriented journal serves as a crucial bridge between cutting-edge management research and its practical application for business leaders, scholars, and students. MBR reflects Dr. Singhal's enduring vision for the dissemination of transformative knowledge.

 

Singhal's research is known worldwide and has a focus on areas of trade dynamics, poverty-level income, and queuing theory. He holds the McCurdy Professorship, an award that the Merrick School of Business grants to the faculty member who showcases research excellence. Prof. Singhal holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Kent State University.

 

Dr. Singhal, whio has served at UBalt since 1983, will be formally recognized at The University of Baltimore's May 21 Commencement ceremony.
