Preparing Students for a Successful Future
Mentorship is an important and rewarding part of the UBalt student experience. So when Mel B. Cook, B.S. '15, received the email asking her to meet with a current student interested in the SavorUB program, there wasn't a doubt in her mind that she wouldn't say yes.
Mel graduated with her degree in Health Systems Management from UBalt's College of Public Affairs and is now the owner and principal trainer of Suite Conversation and a HIT Analyst for Johns Hopkins Health Systems.
"I would not have been successful without having a village that supported me and mentors willing to sew into my vision," Mel said. "I try to serve as an example to current students that my former self may have needed while attending UBalt. That's why I was excited to be an alumni mentor."
SavorUB is more than just a meal. It's a real opportunity to connect.
SavorUB is the University of Baltimore's alumni mentorship program, which pairs students with alumni based on their shared personal and professional interests.
Student-alumni pairs initially meet at a local restaurant, and from there, one-on-one mentoring relationships can be tailored to meet individual needs.
This past March, Sakeenah Boyd, a student preparing to graduate this December with a bachelor's degree in Health Systems Management, contacted the Office of Alumni Relations hoping to connect with alumni in the industry to gain insight into preparing for life post-graduation.
"I was thrilled when I heard I would be meeting with Mel," she explained.
From the moment they connected, Sakeenah and Mel knew this was a perfect match.
"The most beneficial part was the connection I made with the UBalt alumni community," Sakeenah said about her SavorUB experience. "While getting to know Mel and hearing about her UBalt and professional experiences, I saw the similarities in my own journey at UBalt and gained that extra push I needed to make it to graduation."
"We can all thrive, build and grow together," Mel said. "And, I am appreciative and grateful for the opportunity to serve as a mentor for Sakeenah."
