The University of Baltimore School of Law will lead the University in an event marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, April 29 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Moot Court Room in the school's John and Frances Angelos Law Center, 1420 N. Charles St. This panel discussion, led by School of Law faculty, will explore how historical and contemporary battles over power, justice and the rule of law shape the future of the nation. It is free and open to the public. Registration is required; follow the link below.

Key themes and discussion will include:

  • The American Experiment: Legal scholars and historians examine how past struggles over power, rights, and governance continue to influence our political and legal landscape.
  • Precedent vs. Power: The panel will discuss the role of legal precedent in the American system and how modern political crises test long-established doctrines.
  • Challenges to the Republic: Conversations will focus on the stresses facing the "American idea"—liberty, equality and democracy—including debates over separation of powers and executive authority.

This event highlights how the checks and balances of constitutional government advance (or fail to advance) liberty and the general welfare in the United States. Panelists will include Professor of Law John Bessler; Professor of Law Gilda DanielsMichael Higginbotham, the Laurence M. Katz Professor of Law; and Mortimer Sellers, Regents Professor of the University System of Maryland.
