The University of Baltimore is ranked #75 in the nation in the category of Social Mobility, tied with five other institutions for the accolade among all that qualified in the 2027 edition of U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges publication. According to the magazine, social mobility is measured by a school's Pell Grant graduation rates and its Pell Grant graduation rate performance.
UBalt is ranked ahead of any other public or private Maryland institution in the National Universities category for Social Mobility. It landed on the list of nationally ranked institutions due to its number of doctoral degrees granted in a given year, and its recent Carnegie classification in the Research Colleges and Universities category.
"Economically disadvantaged students are less likely than others to finish college, even when controlling for their achievement in high school," U.S. News says. "But some colleges are more successful than others at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded with Pell Grants. These federal grants are awarded to students based on federal poverty guidelines, family size and whether the student is supported by a single parent."
Nationally, UBalt tied with five other institutions for effectiveness in social mobility: North Carolina Central University, St. John's University, the University of Southern California, the University of West Georgia, and Valdosta State University.
