Policy

University of Baltimore seeks to provide a high quality student experience through its athletic activities, both
competitive and recreational.  The University recognizes that there may be circumstances under which
students wish to report concerns about the University’s athletic activities to a University official who is not
directly involved with the management of the athletic activities. The University’s process for reporting those
concerns is set forth in this policy.
The office overseeing the handling and response to concerns about the University’s athletic activities is the
Office of Student Support.  Student concerns are handled confidentiality to the fullest extent possible.
Reporting a Concern:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Reporting a concern.  Students with a concern regarding the University’s athletic activities, may
report their concern to the Office of Student Support. This office has been selected for its capacity
for handling sensitive situations and independence from Campus Recreation and Wellness. The Dean
of Students or designee will document the issue of concern.
Assessment of a concern.  The Dean of Students or designee will assess the nature of the concern
and determine possible courses of action, which may include, but are not limited to: initiating an
investigation, mediation, and/or meeting with the Executive Director of Student Development.
Confidentiality. Students may submit concerns confidentially and the University will endeavor to
protect the confidentiality of a student, when requested, to the fullest extent possible.  The
documented issue of concern will be shared with the Executive Director of Student Development if
it is determined that doing so is necessary to address the reported concern and/or the Executive
Director may be of assistance in resolving an underlying problem.  Where information about a matter
is shared with the Executive Director, the Executive Director will protect the confidentiality of the
student and the documented issue of concern, to the greatest extent possible.  There may be some
circumstances where adherence to strict confidentiality could prevent the University from fully
addressing a concern or complaint, and therefore the ability to maintain a student’s confidentiality
may not be possible.  In that event, the reporting student would be advised accordingly as soon as
possible.
Recommendations.  The Dean of Students or designee, after working through the appropriate
information gathering process, will make a recommendation to the Associate Vice President for
Student Success and Support Services for a resolution consistent with applicable University policies.
Retaliation.  Any retaliation or discrimination against a student who reports a concern under this
policy is prohibited.
For any questions relating to this policy or for reporting a concern, students are urged to contact the Office
of Student Support at: web (ubalt.edu/StudentSupport), email (StudentSupport@ubalt.edu), or phone
(410.837.4755).
