Philosophy, Law, and Ethics is a pre-law pathway to a career in law. 

EARLY ENTRY OPTION REQUIREMENTS

  • These requirements apply to students entering this program in fall 2019 and thereafter. Students who enrolled earlier should consult the catalog in effect at the time they enrolled.
  • Transfer students: You may apply up to 6 credits (two courses) toward program requirements, with the approval of the program director.
  • Read the course descriptions.
  • Learn more about qualifying for and taking advantage of the Law School Early Entry Option through the UBalt School of Law.

General Education Requirements (38 credits)

General Education requirements for all new students entering UBalt in fall 2017 and after.

 

Philosophy, Law, and Ethics Law School Early Entry Option Requirements (36 credits)

PHILOSOPHY, LAW AND ETHICS CORE (21 CREDITS)

Choose one of the following 100-level philosophy courses (3 credits):

  • PHIL 100 Introduction to Philosophy 
  • PHIL 140 Contemporary Moral Issues 
  • PHIL 150 Critical Thinking and Arguments 

Choose one of the following history of philosophy courses (3 credits):

  • PHIL 317 Ancient Philosophy 
  • PHIL 319 Modern Philosophy 
  • PHIL 320 20th Century Philosophy 
  • PHIL 321 Philosophers that Changed the World

Choose any two upper-division (300- or 400-level) history courses (6 credits).

Choose any two upper-division (300- or 400-level; course code GVPP) policy, politics and international affairs courses (6 credits). 

Required capstone course (3 credits):

  • PHIL 499 Capstone in Philosophy, Law, and Ethics

STUDENT-DESIGNED CONCENTRATION (15 CREDITS)

Choose five 200- to 400-level philosophy courses, at least one of which must be 400-level (15 credits).


*NOTE: The PLE early entry program requirement of 36 credits identifies how many credits must be earned within the PLE major prior to beginning law school. Upon successful completion of the first year of law school (that is, with 32 credits), 12 credits from law school will then be applied to the remaining requirements of the PLE major, which will complete the PLE degree requirements (for a grand total of 48 credits in the PLE major). If the student does not complete the first year of law school, the regular PLE degree requirements apply, which also allows for up to 12 law school credits to count toward the PLE degree.
