Professors use field trips to cast new light on lessons

At The University of Baltimore, immersive learning opportunities happen every semester.

Just this year, dozens of students traveled abroad with the Merrick School of Business for an intense week of learning global business practices in Vietnam, Austria and Panama. This spring, arts students visited local museums and became their own exhibit, and design and communications students traveled north to New York for a museum tour, while global affairs and human security students went south to Washington, D.C., to step inside the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank.

These unique learning opportunities not only give students access to new places and spaces, but add depth to the in-class discussions and open doors to future career paths, explained Alina Wall, M.A. in Global Affairs and Human Security student.

Of the DC visit, she said, “We engaged with professionals tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from poverty reduction to anti-corruption initiatives to infrastructure reform to addressing climate change. Hearing firsthand how these experts use strategic partnerships and policy to create real change deepened my understanding of how international development functions globally.”

Majesty Qiydaar, B.S.’15 and M.S.’22, was invited as an Integrated Design alum to join current students in the Digital Communication, Integrated Design, and Information Design and Information Architecture programs to head to New York City this spring. The group toured Rubenstein Design Studio, connected with alum, Talia Inbar, and took in more art and design around the city.

“I think going to a field trip out of town can bring college students out of their comfort zone and explore life outside their normal lives,” he said. “For me, it brought me outside of the norm in Maryland, and having never been to the Big Apple before, it was, all in all, a great experience.”

“I saw New York not only through a tourist's lens, but through a designer's lens, also. The logos and signage on all the billboards, buildings and other usage of media marketing was breathtaking and very inspiring. It encouraged me to keep going.”
