The University of Baltimore has announced the appointment of Dan Gerlowski, professor of economics, as the interim dean of the Robert G. Merrick School of Business, effective July 1. Gerlowski succeeds Dr. Raju Balakrishnan, who begins his retirement from the deanship at the end of June after successfully leading the school since 2023. Dr. Balakrishnan will remain a member of the Merrick School faculty through the end of 2026.
Gerlowski brings extensive institutional knowledge and proven leadership experience to the role. A longtime member of the UBalt community, he has previously served as both associate dean and interim dean of the Merrick School of Business. His leadership has extended university-wide as co-chair of The University of Baltimore’s Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Self-Study, where he played a pivotal role in the institution's accreditation and strategic planning. He also served as President of the University Faculty Senate from 2013 to 2015.
"Dan's long and distinguished tenure at UBalt, his leadership during our recent MSCHE reaccreditation initiative, as well as his active role in the current strategic planning process, uniquely qualify him for this important role," said University of Baltimore Provost Ralph Mueller. "I am very thankful for Dan's commitment and am looking forward to working with him, both as Interim Dean of the Merrick School of Business and as Accreditation and Planning Faculty Fellow."
Gerlowski's appointment ensures a seamless transition and upward trajectory for the Merrick School of Business, which is recognized for its AACSB-International accreditation—a distinction earned by fewer than six percent of business schools worldwide—and its dedication to serving working professionals.
In stepping into this role, Gerlowski emphasizes a vision centered on the holistic success and well-being of students and graduates.
"Every business school wants to create opportunities for graduates," said Gerlowski. "Given our regional position, we want to be an educational catalyst for upwardly mobile graduates who can solve problems in a traditional way and with new technologies. Working with the School of Business team, we want workforce ready graduates who are not only impacting the world around us, but also leading happy, sustainable, and productive lives."
Gerlowski's appointment comes at a pivotal time as the Merrick School continues to evolve the University's "Knowledge That Works" philosophy to meet the demands of an AI-driven economy. By bridging the gap between rigorous academic theory and practical, real-world application, the school remains a cornerstone of the Baltimore-Washington corridor's business ecosystem, ensuring that both undergraduate and graduate students are prepared for the complexities of the modern workforce.
