UWP Portfolios

A writing portfolio is a collection showcasing the most polished versions of writing assignments at the end of a semester. These documents are collected together in one place, and accompanied by some critical self-reflection about the writing. Portfolio-based writing courses allow instructors to grade only that work which has been carefully developed through several drafts.

Some of the benefits of portfolio-based writing assessment include:

  • evidence of a student’s writing growth
  • demonstration of the writing process behind the production of the documents—the portfolio includes early drafts, class notes, workshop responses, and so on
  • authentic view of a student’s writing as a body of work and not as a set of individual, disconnected assignments
  • consistency of assignments and standards across many sections/disciplines
