The University of Baltimore will showcase its innovative approach to artificial intelligence education at the AI+ Expo, May 7-9, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

As the lead organizer for UBalt's participation in the expo, the Merrick School of Business will highlight its master's degree in artificial intelligence for business blends business acumen with AI technical expertise. The school's presence at the AI+ Expo (at Booth 447) reflects the University's commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders to work alongside AI as partners, keeping humanity at the center of technology-based innovation.

"Technical skills alone won't cut it," says Merrick School of Business Dean Raju Balakrishnan. "Our educational approach equips students to understand what AI can and cannot do, and the ethical implications of deploying it. That critical perspective—the human element—is what will set our graduates apart in an AI-transformed economy."

The school's flagship graduate program in Artificial Intelligence for Business is a 30-credit, STEM-designated program that can be completed in as little as 18 months. Rather than simply training technical specialists, the program emphasizes how professionals can leverage AI to improve individual job performance and drive organizational growth. Students learn to design, train and evaluate AI and machine learning models while understanding ethical and regulatory implications through a business and management lens.

The school also offers two graduate certificates—AI Fundamentals for Business and AI Business Applications—as well as an AI specialization within its MBA program, providing flexible pathways for professionals at various career stages.

UBalt's commitment to AI extends across the institution. The Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences offers a B.S. in Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations, which prepares students to integrate AI into real-world IT infrastructures with hands-on experience in machine learning, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and cybersecurity, all with an emphasis on ethical, human-centered AI development.

At the heart of the institution’s AI ecosystem is the Center for AI Learning and Community-Engaged Innovation. CAILI serves as a regional engine where AI innovation, learning and problem-solving are powered by students, faculty, industry and the communities UBalt serves.

"CAILI is not simply a campus resource. It is a regional engine where AI innovation, learning and problem-solving are co-created by students, faculty, industry and the communities we serve," says Dr. Jessica A. Stansbury, CAILI's founding director. "This is not community-engaged work. It is community-led transformation."

CAILI equips faculty, students and the Baltimore community to responsibly engage with generative AI through ethical, equitable and interdisciplinary learning, research and innovation. The center offers faculty education through interactive workshops and AI tool training, academic programming including AI literacy courses, and applied AI projects addressing real-world societal and workforce challenges.

The University of Baltimore recently launched its inaugural AI-Enabled Business Accelerator in partnership with the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Maryland TEDCO. The nine-week intensive program showcased eight Baltimore founders using artificial intelligence to solve real problems in healthcare, housing, energy and education.

In the Merrick School of Business, faculty research addresses critical challenges in AI implementation, exploring applications in finance, accounting, marketing and entrepreneurship, as well as examining AI ethics in business and the future of work. These research initiatives align with national priorities for building a globally competitive, AI-ready workforce.

"The goal is to transform students from passive consumers of AI outputs into skilled practitioners who know how to question, verify, and reason alongside these tools,” said Dr. Ting Zhang, Ph.D., professor of Economics in the school.

Attendees of the AI+ Expo are invited to visit Booth 447 to network with Merrick School of Business faculty scholars, learn about the school's AI-focused programs, and explore partnership opportunities. Faculty and students will be available to discuss how the school's academic offerings can benefit organizations seeking to develop AI-capable leadership.
