As reported by Baltimore Magazine, a University of Baltimore School of Law student is receiving support from the school's recently announced Bereano Family Scholarship. The student, who fled Afghanistan during the conflict there and later settled in Baltimore, is preparing to graduate from law school this spring, and will take the Maryland bar exam this summer.
The father-son duo of Bruce and The Hon. Bryon Bereano, J.D. '99, established the Bereano Family Scholarship in late 2023. The endowed fund provides a full scholarship each year to a University of Baltimore School of Law student with demonstrated financial need. The Bereano family has pledged $1.16 million to the endowed fund, with $40,000 dedicated annually to a scholarship recipient.
The inaugural recipient of the scholarship is a third-year student from Afghanistan. The student received legal training in her home country but escaped oppressive and threatening conditions of the Taliban government there to pursue a legal career in the United States.
The magazine recounts the student's story, which begins with her childhood desire to receive a public-school education in the midst of an oppressive regime. Eventually, she was forced to flee her home country and resettle in the U.S. She found her way to Baltimore while pursuing her passion for legal advocacy. This coming summer, she'll sit for the bar exam.
When the scholarship was announced, Bruce Bereano said, "This impressive young woman is exactly the kind of student my son and I want to support. She has already overcome great adversity and will use her law degree to help others. I have been extremely fortunate in my life to have received the assistance of others in my career and fortunately being able to do so, I want to give back to others as my parents taught me to do."
