University of Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Establish Internship to Encourage Writers to Explore the World of Publishing via Hopkins Press

An agreement between The University of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University will provide for two unique internships with Johns Hopkins Press for writing students at UBalt who want to explore the world of publishing. The partnership will benefit students in The University of Baltimore's English program as well as its MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts program. The two interns, selected by representatives from the Johns Hopkins Press, will receive invaluable work experience, fresh perspectives and more through networking opportunities and exposure to the publishing industry.
During the academic year-long internship, each intern will receive a comprehensive overview of the industry, through hands-on experience with JHU's Books and Journals divisions, Hopkins Fulfillment Services, and its Project MUSE, which promotes the creation and dissemination of essential resources in the humanities and social sciences via collaboration with libraries, publishers and scholars worldwide. Betsy Boyd, director of UBalt's MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts, says the collaborative internship is meaningful to new writers for two simple, very important reasons: "We're thrilled about it because everyone involved in making it happen cares deeply that interns receive real-world, hands-on publishing experience that can lead to jobs. Plus, these are internships that pay—a fair-minded rarity in this world. Our students will benefit greatly, year after year. It's a win-win-win for everyone."
Jane Delury, who directs UBalt's B.A. in English program, says the undergraduate degree and the Creative Writing & Publishing Arts program "are very much sister programs, working closely together to offer opportunities for all of our students. Betsy and I, along with the entire English and CWPA faculty, seek out possibilities that bring undergraduates and graduates together as a vibrant, creative community, both on campus and in greater Baltimore. This excellent internship with Johns Hopkins Press is a perfect example of that partnership and spirit."
Julia Lynton-Brown, who serves as director of People, Culture & Equity at Johns Hopkins University Press, says, "We believe this partnership will not only benefit the students by providing invaluable work experience, but will also offer fresh perspectives and innovative ideas through networking opportunities and exposure to the publishing industry."
Key features of the internship include the following:
- Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access: The program supports DEIA principles and prioritizes first-generation, low-income applicants.
- Project-Based Learning: Interns will engage in meaningful projects, from critical aspects of industry standards, to learning about book production, to creating DEIA-focused marketing catalogs.
- Flexible Schedule: To accommodate various needs, we offer a mix of in-person sessions and virtual meetings.
- Compensation: Interns are compensated at $15.50 per hour at an average of 5-15 hours per week from October to May.
