Provost Spotlight

UBalt has bestowed the Distinguished University Professor honor upon three professors: Angela Vallario in the School of Law, Alan Lyles in the College of Public Affairs, and Steve Scalet in the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences

The Distinguished University Professor title represents the highest academic rank that can be bestowed upon a tenured faculty member at UBalt. It recognizes not only excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service, but also a transformative impact on one's academic field and profession, as well as significant contributions to the well-being of Baltimore City and the State of Maryland.

Angela Vallario, SOL

Prof. Vallario's scholarship has shaped trust-and-estates law for more than two decades. Her treatise, Fundamentals of Estate Planning, stands as the leading authority on Maryland estate law. While her research is cited by the state's highest courts, she also takes a dynamic, student-focused approach in the classroom. Angela redesigned the first-year Contracts course to incorporate interactive learning environments with small-group work, asynchronous modules, and multiple formative assessments. She's also integrated bar exam preparedness into doctrinal courses -- a model for her colleagues in the law school. In addition, she has earned two James May Faculty Awards and three peer-granted outstanding teacher awards, placing her at the top of the field at UBalt.

Alan Lyles, CPA

Dr. Lyles has shown an unwavering commitment to both teaching and learning at the institution. He has sought to improve pedagogy, identifying quantitative courses that could be strengthened to improve student success and creating webinars with distinguished speakers to address critical issues like diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. The College of Public Affairs also cites Alan's scholarly productivity, which includes an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki, the USM Regents Award for Scholarship, and his appointment to the National Academy of Public Administration. Alan excels at providing service to others as well, from teaching Tai Chi to local youth in Baltimore to mentoring his faculty colleagues.

Steve Scalet, CAS

Dr. Scalet has built a substantial scholarly portfolio in the field of philosophy, which underscores his influence across diverse areas, including social and political philosophy, business ethics, and applied ethics. His book, Markets, Ethics, and Business Ethics, is an important contribution to the field, with experts praising Steve's integration of pressing ethical issues, including the proliferation of AI and the evolving purpose of business, with key philosophical principles. Steve's teaching record is equally impressive, exemplified by his 2024 CELTT UBalt Student Support Award for fostering a learning environment that is both accessible and intellectually rigorous. Under his leadership, the Hoffberger Center for Ethical Engagement is one of UBalt's most active academic centers, hosting events that raise the institution's profile across constituencies.
